Roald Dahl's Imaginormous Challenge 2019

Frequently Asked Questions relating to the Imaginormous Challenge.

Do I have to write a story in 100 words?

No, you don’t! We are only looking for story ideas – the more creative the better. Think about what kind of story you’d like to read and let your imagination run wild! Need some inspiration? Take a look at some of our favorite entries from previous years!

How do I enter?

Click on the page Enter and look at all of the fields you need to complete - and make sure you have your parent or guardian’s permission to enter. You can also enter on behalf of a child or pupil if you’re a parent, guardian or a teacher entering on behalf of your class.

This year, for the first time ever, you can also submit hand-written stories by simply uploading the visual of your hand-written story to the website.

Who can enter?

If you are an American resident and are between 5 – 12 years old, you can enter the Imaginormous Challenge. This competition is open to American residents only, but we run Roald Dahl’s Imaginormous Challenge in lots of countries all over the world including Australia, France and South Africa!

Can I enter as many times as I want?

Yes. There is no limit to how many times you can enter, but each entry must be 100 words or less.

Do you have any example 100-word story ideas which I could take a look at?

Why, yes we do! Take a look on our News page - we’ve uploaded some of our very favorite story ideas from over the years! And don’t forget, if you’re after even more inspiration why not pick up a Roald Dahl book?

I’m a teacher, do you have any lesson resources that I could use to teach my class?

We most definitely do! If you click on Teachers we’ve created special lesson resources with Scholastic. If you’re interested in even more Roald Dahl inspired lessons (quite frankly, what teacher wouldn’t be?!) then head over to the Teacher Resources page on!

When will the prize winners be announced?

Depending on the number of entries we receive, the announcement that the five Golden Ticket winners have been found will be shared on in March 2020. However, each winning entry will be notified by phone or email before the details are announced here.

If I enter does this mean that Roald Dahl Story Company will then own my story idea forever?

Not at all! Roald Dahl’s Imaginormous Challenge is all about encouraging imaginormous creativity - not taking other people’s ideas! Every idea entered and all intellectual property linked to the idea will be owned by the participant. For full terms and conditions linked to the challenge take a look here.

When does the Imaginormous Challenge close?

Roald Dahl's Imaginormous Challenge will close on Friday 20 December 2019
